In the 1992, after the collapse of the Yugoslavia, started the organization of the Croatian Air Force. After the civil war Serbian Army took away all the equipment or destroyed it, so the Croatian had to rebuilt all the installation and defense systems. The backbone of the Croatian Air Force consist in MiG interceptor and Antonov cargo aircraft. The rotary wing component is based on a Mil Helicopters.
Pleso AFB is one of the most important military installation in Croatia, at 20 km from the center of Zagabria, the capital of the country, it share the any installation with the Zagabria International Airport.
Pleso AFB is the home of 1st Fighter Squadron that fly with MiG-21 Bis interceptors. Its task is air defense due to the caracteristic of the aircraft. All MiGs are maintaned in at Pleso hangars. This AFB is also the home of a Antonov An-2 squadron. Its tasks is recce and transport. Mil Mi-24 Hind attack helicopters and Mil Mi-8 troop transport helicopters has been deploied at Pleso airfield.
The Croatian Canadair CL-415 squadron, that is almost alway deployed in military airfield near shores, are maintained and serviced at Pleso AFB.
