Aviano is a small town in the Pordenone Region just some kilometers from Venice, Italy. It is located in the North-East area of the Country. The airfield was born during the First World war when Italian airplanes taken off in order to destroy Austro-Hungarian troops. It was used between WWI an II as a trainig airfield by Italian Airforce. During WWII the base was used by Italian and German bombers as tactical and support base. After the suffering of Allied bombing missions during WWII , it was seriously damaged and completely rebuilt after the end of the War. The first Group that used the Base after the Second World war was the 51th Fighter Wing of the new Italian Airforce that used the DH Vampire FB5. On 1952 the 51th Figher Wing moved Istrana ItAFB (just some km away from Aviano) and an agreement between Italy and USA permitted the installation of a US-NATO base in that airfield. The 1954 was the year of a new life for Aviano AFB. In these days the 31th TFW is using F-16C and F-16D block 50-52 for Patrol Missions but during the Balkan War, the F-16s together USMC, Dutch, Spanish and some more airplanes taken off from Aviano to the Ex-yugoslavia Area.
Todat the 31st Fighter Wing is home to two fighter squadrons, the 510th FS and the 555th FS. Both squadrons relocated from Ramstein AB in 1994 and redesignated.

Many thanks to all the 31st FW and Italian AF personnel.

Ringraziamenti a tutto il personale del 31st FW e dell'Aeronautica Militare Italiana.
